The Higher Occupational Certificate in Sound Operation equips students to set up, operate and maintain professional audio equipment across live, recorded and broadcast environments.

The qualification combines sound theory, mixing, acoustics, fault-finding, electronic maintenance principles and basic business management with practical and workplace learning.

Graduates are prepared for roles such as Sound Assistant, Junior Sound Technician, Sound Technician or freelance Sound Operator, with a pathway toward further NQF Level 6 study.

This qualification is structured across three learning pillars: Knowledge Modules, Practical Skill Modules and Work Experience Modules.

  • RPL may be available for learners without formal qualifications but with relevant industry experience
  • No prior audio or technical experience is required
  • Applicants must be 16 years or older

Students are not required to purchase specialist professional audio equipment to begin the programme. Professional audio gear is provided in the RISE Academy facilities.

  • Headphones, with over-ear headphones recommended for critical listening exercises
